In Memory Of Thomas Gerald “Gerry” Luther, Jr

June 3, 1947 – June 8, 2024

It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that Caliche, Ltd. announces the passing of Gerry Luther, Chief Operating Officer of Caliche Management, LLC, its GP. He lost his battle with ALS on June 8th, 2024.

Ralph Waldo Emerson said: “The purpose of life is not to be happy. It is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you lived and lived well.”

Gerry lived his life in this way. He touched many lives, and his life’s work made a difference throughout the world.

Over ten years of his twenty-year Air Force career was spent at the School of Aerospace Medicine, Bioenvironmental Engineering Department, Brooks AFB, Texas. Gerry’s devotion to Health, Education, and Service was recognized by USAFSAM/EDII. During his career, it is estimated that he trained over 5,000 students to include engineers, doctors, senior-level, mid-level, and entry-level technicians. Gerry was awarded Senior NCO of the Year at USAF Hospital Lakenheath, and Senior NCO of the Quarter at Brooks AFB, Texas. In February of 1980, he was designated Master Instructor by the U.S. Air Force School of Aerospace Medicine at Brooks AFB, Texas.

After retiring, his work continued for a combined 36 years at Environmental Technologies, Inc. and Caliche, Ltd. (August 8, 1988 to June 8, 2024). Gerry was a Council-certified Indoor Environmentalist, Professional Safety Source, and Occupational Health & Safety Technologist. He was also a member of:

  • American Society of Safety Engineers, joined December 1993
    • 2008-2009 Safety Professional of the Year for Outstanding Contributions to the Coastal Bend Chapter American Society of Safety Engineers
  • Indoor Air Quality Association
  • Association of Chemical Industry of Texas
  • American Society of Safety Professionals, Region III and Coastal Bend Chapter
    • 2017 Region III Hall of Fame Inductee
  • National Safety Council
  • Honorary Lifetime Member – Gulf Coast Section American Industrial Hygiene Association

Gerry supported multiple Magnolia non-profit organizations to include:

    • Started First Impressions group – “Bridge Builders for Christ”
    • Active with Greeting and Community Outreach

A Celebration of Life service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 15, 2024 at the Magnolia Church of Christ. Donations can be made in Gerry’s honor to the Sunny Glen Children’s Home.
